Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi said on Monday that his trip to Qatar is aimed at activating neighborhood diplomacy with the Persian Gulf states.
Raisi told reporters just before departure for Qatar that the visit was made at the invitation of Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani with two objectives.
The first objective is to expand ties with the friend, brother, and neighbor Qatar and the second one is to participate in Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), the President noted.
In line with activating neighborhood diplomacy, especially with the Persian Gulf countries, this visit is a step towards enabling communications between these countries and leveraging their capacities in expanding political and economic ties especially with Qatar with which Iran has joint gas fields, he said.
We have considerable cooperation in energy field, Raisi said, adding that Iran and Qatar can also take fundamental steps to elevate cooperation in broader economy.
He described cooperation with GECF an important issue and said that the forum was formed on the initiative of Iran which is a founding member.
Iran is among the world’s three largest gas exporters along with Russia and Qatar, Raisi highlighted.
He expressed hope that he would have meetings with the heads and officials of other countries participating in the forum.
