In a joint statement, the Ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq confirmed that all gas supplies to power stations ceased following the attack. They are collaborating with Dana Gas, the Emirati company involved in the field, to investigate the incident and work towards restoring normal operations.
Omid Ahmed, spokesperson for the Ministry of Electricity in Iraqi Kurdistan, stated that the attack caused a reduction of approximately 2,600 megawatts in power generation, out of an overall capacity of 4,000 megawatts. He noted that this disruption led to an electricity supply drop of about 80% in the region, which is home to over 6.5 million residents.
According to Agence France-Presse, power outages have affected several areas, including Sulaymaniyah, the second-largest city in the region.
As of now, the identity of those responsible for the drone strike remains unknown. This incident marks the second drone attack on the Kormor gas field within a short span, as Iraqi Kurdish security forces had previously intercepted a drone attempting to reach the field on Sunday evening.
