According to a devastating UN assessment, the war on Gaza has reversed 69 years of human progress, destroying the fundamental pillars of a functioning society.
The report, summarized by UN expert Francesca Albanese, states that the economic, humanitarian, and social crises have moved the Palestinian territories “from a lack of development to complete destruction.” The UNCTAD report revealed that Gaza’s economy shrank by 87%, with individual wealth collapsing to a mere $161 per person.
Albanese wrote in a post on X – on Tuesday – that this represents the worst economic collapse ever recorded, adding, “This is not a war; it is genocide.”
With every system for survival—including food, shelter, and health care—destroyed, the UN body warns that Gaza is on the “brink of total collapse.” Recovery is expected to be a multi-decade effort requiring more than $70 billion and extensive international aid.
