Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Friday that the people’s large turnout for the elections and their support for the ruling system of the country will help the Iranian negotiators to participate in international talks with much more strength.
Araqchi is heading the Iranian negotiating team in talks with the remaining participants to a 2015 landmark nuclear deal – known as JCPOA – to revive the accord.
Araqchi, who was in Vienna for a new round of talks over the issue, cast his vote for the Iranian presidential election at a polling station in Iran’s embassy in the Austrian capital.
Meanwhile, Iranians have participated, with a heavy turnout, in the 13th presidential election, the 6th City and Village Councils elections, as well as the Parliament and the Assembly of Experts’ midterm election.
Polling stations across Iran opened at 7 am local time and will continue to receive voters until midnight. The Interior Ministry says it may extend the election period until 2 am Saturday if necessary.
