Russia said on Thursday that US strike earlier this month in Syria casts doubts on President Donald Trump’s pledge to fight ISIL Takfiri group.
The United States missile attack on a Syrian airfield casts doubt on President Donald Trump’s election campaign pledge to jointly combat ISIL, Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) Director Sergei Naryshkin said at an international security conference Thursday.
“The recent US Tomahawk strike at the airbase in Syria, which served as a stronghold for government troops to attack terrorist positions, makes us question the sincerity of President Trump’s election promises to make every effort to forge a joint international struggle against Daesh,” Naryshkin said.
On April 7, the United States launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles at the Syrian military airfield in Ash Shairat. US President Donald Trump said that the attack was a response to the alleged chemical weapon use in Syria’s Idlib province on April 4.
