Major General Mohammad Hossein Baqeri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, is planning to visit Iraq, according to an Iranian military commander.
President of Iraqi Defense University for Higher Military Studies Staff Lt. Gen. Saad Mizher Mohsen Al-Alaq met with Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh in Tehran on Sunday morning.
During the meeting, Nasirzadeh announced Baqeri’s plan to visit Iraq as part of Tehran’s efforts to enhance cooperation with the neighboring country.
General Nasirzadeh hailed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Supreme National Defense University of Iran and the Iraqi Defense University for Higher Military Studies, saying the agreement will allow the two institutions to share experiences.
He also stated that the Iranian and Iraqi nations’ solidarity and fraternity will result in the formation of new regional power.
Iranian military leaders have often stated their willingness to boost Iraq’s defense capabilities and meet its military equipment needs.
In a meeting with Iraq’s interior minister in June, Iran’s defense minister promised Iraq support in ensuring security in the Arab country by providing military and police equipment.
Tehran aims to bolster its defense cooperation with Baghdad, Deputy Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, Brigadier General Aziz Nasirzadeh affirmed on Sunday.
On the sidelines of his meeting with the Iraqi Lt. Gen. Saad Mizher Mohsen Al-Alaq, Nasirzadeh pointed out that Iran and Iraq enjoy many good capacities and commonalities, adding that the countries began mutual cooperation in the defense field.
Nasirzadeh pointed out that ensuring the security and interests of Iran and Iraq requires mutual cooperation, adding that increasing interactions will also enhance economic cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad.
It is noteworthy that on July 18, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian discussed during a phone call with his Iraqi counterpart Fouad Hussein some issues of mutual concern in the field of bilateral ties, as well as major developments in the regional arena, most notably regarding talks between Tehran and Riyadh.
