Marking Lebanon’s 82nd independence day, UNIFIL’s Head of Mission and Force Commander Major General Diodato Abagnara said the international force is committed to support the Lebanese Army.
In a post on X, Abagnara said: “On Lebanon’s 82nd Independence Day, UNIFIL remains committed to supporting the Lebanon Army — our close partner in strengthening stability in the south.”
“The full redeployment of the Lebanese army in the south of the country is a crucial step. Full respect for Lebanon’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity is a central part of implementing Resolution 1701 and a condition for long-term stability,” the UNIFIL chief wrote.

Earlier on Thursday, the UNIFIL announced that the number of Israeli violations of the ceasefire which ended the Israeli war on Lebanon in late 2024 surpassed 10,000.
According to the mission, since the ceasefire took effect on November 27, 2024, it has recorded “over 7,500 air violations, almost 2,500 ground violations north of the Blue Line,” inside Lebanese territory.
UNIFIL also reported locating “over 360 abandoned weapons caches”, which were handed over to the Lebanese Army.
The Israeli enemy continues to bomb Lebanon, mainly the country’s south, almost daily and maintains occupation over five posts along the southern border, in violation of a ceasefire deal reached following a brutal 66-day Israeli war between September and November 2024.
