Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations Majid Takht Ravanchi condemned Washington’s unilateral measures against Tehran, calling on the International Court of Justice to uphold the rule of law and stop “unlawful” US sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
“The United States of America, using coercive measures as an instrument of its foreign policy throughout the past years, has imposed unlawful sanctions against Iran. Its unacceptable behavior has continued unabated and even intensified following its withdrawal from the JCPOA…,” Takht Ravanchi said addressing a virtual meeting of UN General Assembly on “Report of the International Court of Justice” on Tuesday.
“These sanctions have directly and indirectly targeted Iranian companies and the Iranian people and affected Iran’s ability to trade freely,” the Iranian diplomat said, lashing out at US President “who has shamelessly announced that the toughest sanctions will be imposed on Iran and that Iran’s problems will be greater than before.”
“In response to these illegal actions, which are contrary to the principles of the UN Charter, International Law and Iran’s bilateral agreement with the United States in 1955, the Islamic Republic of Iran filed a complaint with the International Court of Justice and requested an interim injunction from the ICJ to stop the illegal actions of the United States,” Takht Ravanchi added.
“The US is bound by the court, and any non-compliance is subject to international responsibility,” he noted.
