Iran has declared it has no plans to hold negotiations with the United States, citing a “irresponsible and obstructive” move by European powers that has fundamentally altered the landscape for future diplomacy on the nuclear issue.
Speaking at his weekly presser on Monday, Esmaeil Baghaei slammed the recent behavior of the three European countries involved in the nuclear talks, describing their stance as “irresponsible and obstructive.”
He said the European troika (UK, France, and Germany) misused the JCPOA’s dispute resolution mechanism to impose US demands on the UN Security Council, while their preconditions for Iran’s participation in negotiations were entirely unreasonable.
“The Europeans failed to fulfill their role as negotiation partners due to their unreasonable conditions,” Baghaei stated, emphasizing that “future negotiations will certainly differ from the past.”
The spokesman asserted that the European action, driven by stubbornness in implementing the United States’ demands, was illegitimate and created no legal obligation for UN member states. He revealed that Iran has formally protested the move at the UN, receiving backing from Russia and China, with the former pointing out the action’s illegality.
Baghaei explained that the core of the dispute lies in the European troika’s unilateral attempt to reimpose expired UN sanctions, an action he said lacks consensus and violates UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which stipulated that all nuclear-related restrictions on Iran should have been lifted.
Connecting the diplomatic confrontation to recent military aggression, the spokesman held the “Zionist regime and the United States” responsible for their attacks on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities. He criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for allowing its reports to be politically misused as a pretext for these “illegal attacks,” while failing to condemn them as required by its own resolutions.
“Based on this reasoning, Iran is currently focusing on examining the impacts and consequences of the actions taken by the European troika and the US,” Baghaei said, definitively ruling out talks with Washington at this stage.
He concluded by stating that US officials’ pride in their criminal action only serves to confirm to the world that the United States is a “law-breaking actor that does not adhere to accepted global rules.”
