US Department of Defense confirmed that 28 American soldiers were killed and wounded in a bomb-laden drone attack in northeastern Jordan, near the Syrian border.
The Pentagon stated that the attack resulted in the death of three soldiers and left 25 others injured, describing the event as a ‘dangerous escalation’.
Subsequently, an American official informed Reuters that the number of injured American soldiers had risen, with approximately 34 soldiers now under monitoring for possible brain injuries stemming from the attack on a base in northeastern Jordan.
Responding to the incident, US President Biden declared that Washington would hold accountable all those responsible for the attack at the appropriate time and in the chosen manner.
This attack follows a series of assaults on bases housing American forces in the region over the past few months, coinciding with the Israeli entity’s aggression against the Gaza Strip backed by the US administration. The situation underscores the heightened tensions in the region and the ongoing challenges faced by US forces stationed in the area.
This is the first time US soldiers have been killed in a strike in the region after Hamas’s 7 October attack on Israel.
Jordan says the attack took place in Syria, not inside Jordan.
US Central Command and President Biden said the attack was on a base in northeastern Jordan, near the Syrian border. It did not name the base.
A Jordanian government spokesman, Muhannad Moubaideen, however, told state TV that the attack targeted al-Tanf base in Syria.
CNN reported that the attack took place at Tower 22 in Jordan near the border with Syria, providing the following satellite image.
