Millions across the Islamic world mark the birth anniversary of Imam Mahdi (pbuh), with faithful Muslims celebrating the occasion and calling for the awaited Imam’s reappearance.
Scenes of jubilant people commemorating the occasion in Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan and Syria swept social media platforms on Tuesday and Wednesday.
1189 years have passed since the birth of Imam Mahdi (pbuh), the 12th and last Shia Imam who went into occultation in 260/874, and will definitely reappear to fill the globe with justice after it has been fraught with oppression.
In the Iraqi city of Karbala, 1189 candles (signifying the Imam’s age) were lit as part of joyful celebrations that take place every year on the mid of Shaaban near the shrines of Imam Hussein (A.S.) and Abu Al-Fadl Al-Abbas (pbuh).
Nearly 4 million pilgrims, including 250,000 foreigners, were in Karbala for the occasion, Iraqi local sources reported.
Meanwhile, several festive events took place across Iranian cities, with a special fireworks ceremony being held at the Holy Mosque of Jamkaran.
In Lebanon, festive atmosphere prevailed as mass celebrations were held in several cities and towns across the country. Photos and videos emerging from Beirut’s southern suburb (Dahiyeh) showed people, especially children performing the well-known song “Salam O Mahdi” in several sites.
In south Lebanon, locals in border towns launched light balloons towards the occupied Palestineian terriotries, a move that signified hope manifested by the reappearence of Imam Mahdi (pbuh).
In Syria, hundreds of people celebrated the birth anniversary of Imam Mahdi (pbuh) with food distributed and Quran recited at Sayyed Zeinab (A.S.) Shrine in Damascus and in several mosques across Aleppo.
Elsewhere in Kashmir, hundreds of people, including scholars and students, were present in celebrations across the Pakistani city.
