Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad said that the late Iranian Commander Lt. General Qassem Suleimani foiled the US strategy of sowing division and sedition in the region.
Assad remarks read out by his media advisor, Buthaina Shaaban, at a ceremony held in Damascus, to commemorate the 2nd anniversary of the assassination of General Suleimani and his companions in a US drone strike outside Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.
“During every mission, Martyr Suleimani endeavored to destroy the pillars of the American strategy to sow discord and foment sedition,” the Syrian president said in his message.
President Assad noted that the assassinated commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC)’s Quds Force threatened the “interests of Washington and its allies in the region.”
“Martyr Suleimani and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis were the cornerstone of confronting the enemies,” the Syrian president said, referring to the former deputy commander of Iraq’s Hashd Shaabi forces who was martyred along with Gen. Suleimani.
He emphasized that the United States assassinated Gen. Suleimani out of its fear THAT THE Iranian general would turn into a model in the region and across the world.
“We must remain loyal to Suleimani’s approach and work to strengthen cooperation between Syria and Iran,” Assad said, as quoted by SANA news agency.
For his part, Iranian Ambassador in Damascus, Mehdi Sobhani, said that the name of the Axis of Resistance has been closely linked and mixed with the name of Qassem Suleimani, adding that “Iran has been able to confront the US hegemony and policies.”
