Dozens of Palestinians were injured when violent clashes erupted at the Damascus Gate of the Old City of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) late Thursday.
Palestinian protesters confronted a group of some 300 extreme-right Jewish settlers, backed by Israeli occupation forces. The Jewish settlers marched to the scene chanting “Death to Arabs.”
The Palestinian Red Crescent said at least 100 Palestinians were injured, including 21 who needed hospital treatment.
The occupation police for its part, said they had identified 20 wounded in its ranks and arrested 44 people in the clashes.
Tensions have been rising for several days as occupation forces have been preventing Palestinians from holding their usual Ramadan evening gatherings outside Damascus Gate, one of the main entrances to Al-Quds Old City and Al-Aqsa holy mosque.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned the violent clashes, blaming far-right Israelis for inciting violence under “the protection of the Israeli army and police.”
For its part, Hamas Resistance group also condemned the Zionist occupation for the clashes, warning against an Israeli plot against the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
