Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of meetings of the 73rd session of United Nations General Assembly in New York on Friday.
Talks during the meeting focused on the latest developments in Syria, particularly the latest agreement on Idib, in addition to efforts exerted to form a committee on discussing Syria’s constitution, SANA news agency reported.
The UN chief expressed hope for the return of security and stability to Syria as well as its position in the Arab world, stressing UN readiness to continue efforts aimed at forming a committee to discuss the new constitution.
Guterres also said the UN is committed to efforts aimed at providing humanitarian aid to Syria.
For his part, al-Moallem said that the UN role is a facilitator in the political process which must be under the Syrian leadership and by the Syrian people only without any foreign interference.
Al-Moallem also met Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, as talks focused on the latest meetings of Guarantor States of Astana process, the implementation of Sochi Agreement on Idlib and the committee on discussing the Constitution.
The two sides agreed on continuous consultation, cooperation and coordination between them in a way that serves the interests of the two countries and peoples, according to the Syrian agency.
