Iranian military chief Major General Mohammad Baqeri warned his Turkish counterpart that the military measures in Syria should not damage the Astana peace talks.
In a phone conversation with Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces General Hulusi Akar, Baqeri underlined maintaining territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of Syria.
Baqeri was referring to the Turkish operation in Syria’s Afrin, where Ankara has been since Friday striking US-backed Kurdish militants.
These measures should not pave the way for the enemies, especially the US and its allies, to achieve their goals, said Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces.
Meanwhile, Baqeri also stressed on importance of avoiding any imminent damage to Syrian people in operation zones.
Meanwhile, Akar pointed to confronting terrorist groups in Afrin, northwestern Syria as main reason behind Turkish forces attack on this region.
He said that Turkey respects territorial integrity of Syria and will comply with its commitments under trilateral talks between Iran, Turkey and Russia.
Turkish Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces announced on Saturday that the operation in Afrin was performed against the Syrian National Democratic Alliance and Syrian Democratic People’s Party.
