President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, on Monday met with Speaker of the House, Nabih Berri, at Baabda Palace. The meeting tackled the general situation in the country and the outcomes of the visit of the US Deputy Special Envoy to the Middle East Morgan Ortagus to Beirut.
President Aoun stressed that the ongoing Israeli occupation of the five positions in South Lebanon complicates the scene, reiterating Lebanon’s commitment to the UN Resolution 1701.
For his part, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri confirmed that “what we heard from Ortagus was different from the assumptions that she was coming to threaten woe, destruction, and dire consequences. I did not hear from the American envoy any call for normalization with Israel, and even Zionist officials did not raise this issue.”
The Lebanese Parliament Speaker described the meeting with the American envoy as “good and positive, and contrary to the atmosphere of alarmism that preceded her arrival in Beirut.”
Deputy US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus, had concluded on Saturday a series of meetings in Beirut with top Lebanese officials, focusing on escalating tensions in southern Lebanon, border security, and urgent economic reforms.
