Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi stressed that diplomatic relations with Syria have not been severed, noting that Tunisia has been represented in Damascus by a consul.
As he received on Tuesday a Tunisian parliamentary delegation that had recently visited Damascus and met with Syrian officials, Essebsi said he does not oppose normalizing ties between the two countries when the conditions are settled in the crisis-hit country.
The delegation told the president their visit was an attempt to restore ties with Syria and to put relations between the two countries on the right path, a statement by the delegation said.
The delegation meanwhile briefed the Tunisian president about its tour in Syria and the meetings held with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, noting that the Syrian authorities voiced readiness to cooperate with Tunis over counter-terrorism and to hand over Tunisians held in Syria.
On the other hand, the delegation, which included nationalist lawmakers, urged Essebsi to work on restoring relations with Syria.
Tunisia reduced its diplomatic representation in Syria in February 2012.
