Manila said that the United States was willing to provide military aid to the Philippines, SunStar Philippines reported.
On Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte met with US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim where the two discussed the ongoing cooperation between the US and the Philippines.
“Sung Kim also assured Duterte that the US understands the security concerns of the Philippines and that the US is ready to provide more military equipment, assistance and training,” Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement.
Relations between the Philippines and the administration of former US President Barack Obama were quite turbulent since Duterte assumed office in June 2016.
Durerte’s controversial war on drugs has attracted numerous allegations of human rights violations and extrajudicial killings.
