In the context of the French initiative to help the Lebanese political parties cope with the presidential deadlock, the special envoy of President Emmanuel Macron, Jean-Yves Le Drian, arrived in Beirut on Tuesday.
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati held talks with Le Drian at the Grand Serail on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by French Ambassador to Lebanon Hervé Magro.
Mikati stressed to his guest that “the beginning of the solution to the current crisis in Lebanon necessitates the election of a new president and the completion of the economic reforms.”
For his part, Le Drian said he is visiting Lebanon to “complete” his mission, adding that he will not be providing any opinion before he resumes his meetings and contacts.
He also hoped that House Speaker Nabih Berri’s initiative will pave the way for the sought solutions.
The French envoy also visited House Speaker Nabih Berri at his residence in Ain Al-Tineh, discussing with him the latest developments of the presidential file in Lebanon.
After the meeting with Le Drian, Speaker Berri said that the views were identical regarding the importance of dialogue, adding that holding the presidential elections is still possible as long as those who seek Lebanon interest are concerned.
