The commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps warned the Europeans that they will have to suffer the consequences of repeating their past mistakes after the European Parliament passed a resolution to designate the IRGC as a “terrorist organization”.
In comments after a meeting with the speaker of the Iranian parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf on Saturday, Major General Hossein Salami advised the European states to avoid repeating past mistakes.
His comments came after the members of the European Parliament passed a resolution on Thursday calling on the European Council and the EU member states to add the IRGC and its subsidiary forces, including the Basij and the IRGC Quds Force, to the EU “terrorist list”.
The IRGC commander reminded the European governments that if they make a mistake again, they will have to accept the consequences.
“Europe has not learned lessons from its past mistakes and thinks that it can undermine the magnificent IRGC, which is empowered by faith, trust, strength and determination, with such statements,” he stated, as quoted by Tasnim news agency.
Major General Salami underlined that Europe owes its security today to the IRGC, because if it were not for the endeavors made by the IRGC, particularly the IRGC Quds Force and late commander Lt. General Qassem Suleimani, the scourge of terrorism created by the US would have engulfed Europeans.
Without the role of the IRGC, terrorism could have plagued the entire Europe, but the Europeans and Americans are used to replacing the executioner with martyr and the oppressor with the oppressed, the commander added.
“IRGC Comes from within the Iranian Nation”
For his part, Qalibaf said that the parliament is ready to decisively respond to any move taken by the European Union against the IRGC.
He stressed that Iran’s enemies “do not have a precise understanding of our nation and the IRGC, and especially they do not have any knowledge and analysis regarding the relationship between the (Iranian) nation and the IRGC,” Mehr news agency reported.
“Today, the most beloved character among the (Iranian) people is Martyr Suleimani,” Qalibaf said referring to the IRGC anti-terror commander who was martyred by a US strike in Iraq’s Baghdad on 2020.
“The European Parliament should know that the proposal it presented as a parliament cannot change the set of facts, the Western Front supported and equipped ISIL arrogantly, and the one who fought terrorism and ended the presence of ISIL in the region is the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps,” the Iranian parliament speaker emphasized, slamming the fact that the Europeans today are supporters of terrorism and terrorist groups.
Amir Abdollahian Condemns EU Move
Earlier on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian condemned the European Parliament’s push, stressing that such a measure is in contravention of the UN Charter.
In a telephone conversation on Friday, Amir Abdollahian and his Swedish counterpart Tobias Billström talked about bilateral and international issues of mutual interest.
The top Iranian diplomat strongly criticized the European Parliament move against IRGC as unconstructive and destructive, expressing hope that during Sweden’s presidency of the European Union, the relations between the bloc and Iran would continue on the right track, the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s website reported.
Iran and Sweden should not allow their historical relations to be affected by parties that have personal and terrorist interests, Amir Abdollahian stated.
The Swedish foreign minister, for his part, emphasized his country’s efforts for closer negotiations with Iran during Sweden’s presidency of the EU.
On the European Parliament’s recent resolution against the IRGC, Billström noted that the motion is non-binding.
