The members of the Supreme Judicial Council unanimously approved a decision to appoint an assistant investigative judge upon the recusal of the lead judge probing Beirut Port blast, Tarek Al-Bitar.
Justice Minister Henry Khoury had proposed the appointment of the assistant judge who is expected to continue the probe suspended since seven months due to Al-Bitar recusal.
Families of the blast victims lashed out at Bitar, describing him as conspirator and calling on him to resign.
Al-Bitar had issued arrest warrants against officials as well as military figures on an illogical basis, pushing the defendants and observers to cast doubts on his probe.
On August 4, 2020, a massive blast rocked Beirut Port blast, killing around 196 citizens and injuring over 6000 of others. The explosion also caused much destruction in the capital and its suburbs.
