Ali Bagheri Kani, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for political affairs left Tehran on Thursday morning for Oman where he is set to meet senior officials.
Bagheri’s trip to Muscat comes a week after he went to Qatar where he held indirect talks with the United States over the revival of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) and the removal of sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
The Oman trip also follows Bagheri’s visit to Russia that took place after the Doha talks.
Bagheri, who is the top negotiator in the JCPOA revival talks, previously spoke with reporters about the goals of his trip to Russia.
He said that Iran has always negotiated with Russia and China over the period that the JCPOA revival talks were ongoing.
He added that negotiations with China had taken place through the embassies of the two countries because of the Covid situation in China.
But, he added, since Russia does not face the same situation, trips by Russian and Iranian officials take place often.
The Doha talks follow negotiations held in Vienna that were stalled in March 2022, nearly a year after they began in Vienna.
The talks, in which the US participates indirectly, focus on the removal of the sanctions that Washington imposed on Tehran after former US president Donald Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in May 2018, throwing the deal into disarray.
