Head of the Strong Lebanon parliamentary bloc, MP Gebran Bassil, said after the bloc’s meeting that “today the Constitutional Council was abolished and suspended because the appeal did not fall, but rather a decision was not issued in its regard.”
“What happened is a violation of the charter and the authority of the President of the Republic in Article 57, and an additional blow to the constitution that we are trying to preserve,” he said.
Bassil deemed what happened as a setback for the Diaspora and not for the FPM. “It was done under a clear political decision by a system allied with each other during the era of President Aoun, and on top of it in the Constitutional Council today was the Shiite duo. This will have political consequences.”
“The president’s authority to reject the law is fundamental, and refusing to respond requires a reinforced majority of 65 deputies, according to Article 57 of the Constitution. Speaker Berri previously corroborated this matter in 1994,” he went on to explain.
