Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Lebanon for a series of meetings following the tragedy which killed more than 200 people at Beirut Port.
Zarif arrived in Beirut on Thursday evening to meet with top Lebanese officials and express Tehran’s solidarity with the nation and government of Lebanon.
Upon his arrival, the top Iranian diplomat was welcomed by his Lebanese counterpart Charbel Wehbe.
In meetings with Lebanese officials on Friday, Zarif will discuss the latest developments in the region and Lebanon following the recent massive blast, the delivery of Iran’s aid for the Lebanese nation, and other issues of mutual interest, Iranian media reported.
In remarks a day earlier, Zarif had lashed out at the US government for maintaining the pressure of sanctions on Lebanon even after the recent deadly blast in Beirut.
Iranian President Hasan Rouhani has expressed Iran’s readiness to assist Lebanon after the explosion by providing medical supplies and helping reconstruct its devastated port.
The governor of Beirut says more than 200 people are believed to have been killed as a result of the August 4 blast, which occurred when a stockpile of more than 2,000 tons of ammonium nitrate exploded.
