Second death resulted from novel coronavirus was recorded on Wednesday as the number of people infected with the virus surpassed 60.
National News Agency cited Rafik Hariri University Hospital as saying that 55-year-old man has died. Lebanese television channels identified the deceased as Maroun Karam.
Karam, a teacher, was infected by a student coming from abroad and was not suffering from any illnesses but had a weak immune system, Lebanese media reported.
He died at the state-run Rafik Hariri University Hospital after being transferred from a hospital in Bsalim, according to Lebanese media.
Separately, Health Ministry announced Wednesday morning that eight additional people were diagnosed with coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in Lebanon to 61.
Four of the eight new patients were diagnosed at Al-Maounat Hospital in Byblos (Jbeil), while the other four were diagnosed at Hotel Dieu de France Hospital in Beirut.
Eleven percent of all cases in Lebanon involve a patient below the age of 20; people aged between 20 and 59 account for 77 percent of cases; and 10 percent of cases involve patients aged 60 and above, the Health Ministry said, as quoted by Lebanon’s English language Daily Star newspaper.
Later on Wednesday, the ministerial committee tasked with combating coronavirus will meet at 4 p.m. The committee will decide on “strict and very important measures” aimed at containing the infectious disease, the state-run National News Agency reported.
