Turkish air strike hit a border area in northeast Syria on Wednesday, a war monitor said, moments after Ankara announced the start of an operation against Syria’s Kurds.

“Turkish warplanes have launched air strikes on … the Ras al-Ain area at the border,” said the Britain-based Opposing Syrian Observatory war monitor.

An AFP correspondent in the area said he heard several explosions.
