Iraqi Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday that the election security plan has entered its final stages. While indicating that repeated simulations have been carried out to ensure the success of the security plan, it confirmed the existence of extensive security coordination with the rest of the units to secure the electoral process using advanced technologies.
The Director of Media and Moral Guidance at the Ministry of Defense, Major General Tahsin Al-Khafaji, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The Ministry of Defense’s role in securing the electoral process began months ago through participation in the security plan for the elections via the Supreme Security Committee,” noting that “this participation was embodied in the frequent meetings of the leaders of the Ministry of Defense and members of the Security Committee, securing the requirements for the success of the security plan for protecting polling centers, distributing forces between polling centers, and securing the transfer of ballot boxes and memory sticks.”
He explained that “the ministry carried out more than one simulation, and the plan underwent many modifications until it was completed and reached its final stages, with regard to the special voting day,” noting that “the ministry prepared a special plan based on the distribution of its directorates, units, weapons commands, operations commands, and teams among the nearby polling centers, in order to ensure rapid deployment and flexibility in implementing the electoral process, which represents a constitutional right for citizens, and then return to the duties complementing the security plan and complete the other part related to securing protection until the end of the voting process at six o’clock in the evening.”
Al-Khafaji explained that “a plan has been prepared for the movement of forces during the electoral process, and polling stations have been distributed among the various departments and institutions,” He clarified that “the Ministry relies on its available resources and capabilities to secure electoral areas, particularly polling stations, in carrying out its security and intelligence duties and deploying troops.”
He pointed out that “this work is based on a significant intelligence and security effort undertaken by military intelligence and the General Directorate of Intelligence,” emphasizing that “the Ministry’s efforts are sufficient to secure the electoral process.”
Al-Khafaji added that “there is an intensive deployment of intelligence and security efforts, with the presence of advanced devices and equipment, and in cooperation with other security agencies, whether in the Ministry of Interior, the National Security Service, or the Popular Mobilization Forces,” indicating that “this mobilized and large effort is characterized by the use of high-precision devices and technologies that will be adopted during the electoral process.”
