Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the international organizations in Geneva Ali Bahraini stated that unilateral sanctions have exacerbated humanitarian crises around the world.
Bahraini made the remarks in a meeting titled ‘The Impact of Unilateral Coercive Measures on Sending Humanitarian Aid and Humanitarian Actor’s Performance’.
“The unlawful nature of unilateral sanctions has been fully proven today,” Bahraini said.
He pointed out that it has become clear that the destructive effects of these sanctions lead to the worsening of humanitarian crises and violations of fundamental rights.
Bahraini emphasized the ineffectiveness of humanitarian exceptions to sanctions, adding that such exceptions will not eliminate the inhumane and illegal nature of sanctions.
Alena Douhan, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Negative Impact of Unilateral Coercive Measures on the Enjoyment of Human Rights also said for her part that the imposition of unilateral sanctions can lead to the violation of the fundamental principles of human rights.
She mentioned the establishment of a mechanism to monitor the effects of sanctions, asking the member states and other actors to support this mechanism.
In this meeting, the representatives of UN member states, including Syria, Russia, Cuba, Belarus, and Venezuela, along with the representatives of international organizations active in humanitarian affairs and human rights also explained the negative effects of unilateral sanctions on the humanitarian environment and the performance of actors in this field.
