Like his other European and American partners, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz threw the ball to Iran’s court, saying that reaching an agreement in Vienna talks depends on Iran.
Answering a question about the time of reaching an agreement in Vienna talks which is underway between Iran and P4+1 in the Austrian capital, Olaf Scholz in an interview with Washington Post said, “It depends on Iran.”
“We gave them a clear message that now is the time for decisions and for progress, and not for prolonging the process. We will not accept the ability of Iran of having a nuclear bomb that can be used. This is the decisive moment, and we hope that they will use the chance. We have not too much time left. Because we know about the progress of the nuclear program of Iran,” he said.
Asked about the strategy that needs to be taken against Iran if there is no returning to an agreement, the German Chancellor said the situation now is that the P4+1 “wait for the answer.”
According to a European official, the Vienna talks be likely resumed Tuesday in the presence of top negotiators.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, a European official said top envoys to the Vienna talks were likely to meet on Tuesday in the Austrian capital, Reuters reported.
For his part, US Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley on Sunday said he would soon return to Vienna for the next round of talks on returning to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, insisting it could still be revived.
“President (Joe) Biden still wants us to negotiate in Vienna,” Malley told MSNBC in an interview on Sunday night.
“We’ll come back next week. That’s a symbol or a sign of our continued belief that it is not a dead corpse – that we need to revive it because it is in our interest”, he also claimed.
