Iran dismissed as “fake” a report claiming that Tehran and the P4+1 group have reached a two-year deal in the talks aimed at reviving the Iran nuclear deal.
A source told Tasnim news agency in Vienna that the report on an interim agreement with Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany is “utterly false and fake”.
The London-based Rai Al-Youm daily has claimed that the two sides have completed a two-year deal in Vienna, by which the US would lift all sanctions placed on Iran by the Trump administration and all of Iran’s enriched uranium would be transported to Russia in return.
The new round of talks between Iran and P4+1 on the revival of the 2015 nuclear deal – known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – and the termination of sanctions on Tehran restarted in Vienna on Monday.
The JCPOA negotiations resumed after the parties took a three-day break for the New Year.
Representatives of Iran and the P4+1 group began the eighth round of the Vienna talks on December 27 focused on the removal of all sanctions imposed on Tehran after Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the agreement. The US is not allowed to directly attend the talks due to its pullout in 2018 from the landmark deal with Iran.
On Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said the ongoing negotiations in Vienna are on the right track.
Speaking to his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the top Iranian diplomat said reaching a good agreement is possible in the talks if the Western side possesses the required goodwill.
“Iran possesses the required will for reaching a good agreement,” he added.
“We can (therefore) reach a good agreement if the Western side is likewise in possession of such a good faith and will,” Amirabdollahian noted.
