Iran is demanding that all U.S. sanctions should be lifted in a verifiable process, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said on Monday, a few weeks ahead of a resumption of talks between Tehran and world powers to revive a 2015 nuclear deal.
Iran said on Monday that all US sanctions should be lifted in a verifiable process, stressing that Washington must guarantee that no administration in the country will repeat these behaviors.
Speaking in his weekly press conference, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that steps the US should take in order to return to the nuclear deal are clear.
If Washington is sincere in its intent to return to the 2015 nuclear deal, it will have to remove all sanctions against Iran and give a guarantee that no US administration will ever scorn the international law again, Khatibzadeh was quoted by Iranian media as saying.
The Iranian diplomat dismissed comments from US national security adviser Jake Sullivan, who has hinted that the US would return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) if Iran does so.
“The United States must bear in mind that it is not a party to the JCPOA and cannot attribute comments to the other JCPOA members or make demands,” the spokesman said.
“They must lift the oppressive sanctions completely and effectively. They must guarantee that no administration in the United States mocks the world and international law and does not repeat these behaviors [withdrawing from intl. deals].”
The talks will start on the announced date and Mr. Baqeri as Iran’s top negotiator will attend the meeting, Katibzadeh said, referring to Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Baqeri, who will lead Iranian delegation to Vienna in the next round set for November 29.
Contact between Iran, Saudi Arabia
Meanwhile, Khatibzadeh said contacts between Iran and Saudi Arabia have not been stopped, although no new talks have been held in person after the fourth round.
“The talks have taken place in a clear and transparent manner, and if we see the seriousness of the Saudis, the next round can definitely take place,” he added.
The Iranian diplomat went on to say, “The Iran-Saudi Arabia talks are bilateral and based on issues of mutual interest.”
