The Strong Lebanon parliamentary bloc held its periodic meeting this Tuesday, headed by MP Gebran Bassil, with talks touching on the latest developments. Conferees called on those concerned with forming the government to separate the formation process from any external factors, as “the main goal is to establish a government that can implement the required reforms, foremost among which is the forensic audit and the reforms mentioned in the French initiative.”
The bloc stressed its rejection of “anything that would violate the existing constitutional and chartered rules in forming the government, and what would harm the balance between the components of the nation.”
Conferees were briefed by Bassil on the recent US sanctions, whereby they affirmed their support for the declaration made by MP Bassil last Sunday and backed up his position on the bloc’s freewill in taking national positions, with emphasis on “the impermissibility of tampering with national unity under the influence and pressure of the outside.”
The bloc also affirmed its adherence to “the best relations between the Lebanese and American peoples and to building the best ties with the new US administration,” congratulating “President-elect Joe Biden and his vice-president on their assumption of power.”
“The sanctions, seen as an administrative non-judicial measure, constitute an unfair and arbitrary step. Therefore, we call for reconsidering this policy and dropping it, and replacing it with a policy of dialogue and openness, because that of isolation and sanctions has never born positive outcomes,” the bloc’s statement read.
