Iranian President Hasan Rouhani said that Islamic Republic will be able to freely sell and buy weapons as of October 18 as the ten-year arms embargo will end on October 18.
Addressing a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Rouhani congratulated the Iranian nation over the end of “ten years of cruel arms sanctions against the Iranians.”
Lifting arms embargo is also the result of the efforts and struggle made by the Iranian people and diplomats in the past years, IRNA news agency quoted Rouhani as saying.
“As of Sunday, we’ll be able to sell our weapons to whoever we’d like, and buy arms from anybody we’d want,” he said, as quoted by Tasnim news agency.
The Iranian president noted that the US made every effort to impede the removal of the arms embargo on Iran, “but the Iranian nation’s resistance yielded results.”
Rouhani also reminded the critics of the nuclear deal that the termination of the arms embargo on Iran is one of the results of the 2015 accord.
He referred to the catastrophe created by the US in Afghanistan in the pretext of establishing security and said everyone can see there is now dangerous situation in Afghanistan.
The US suffered an embarrassing diplomatic defeat in August when the United Nations Security Council rejected a proposal to indefinitely extend the arms ban.
The embargo on conventional arms is due to expire on October 18 under the terms of a resolution that blessed the Iran nuclear deal, signed in July 2015 and officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.
Elsewhere in his address, Rouhani highlighted the US failures against Palestinian, Iraqi and Syrian nations, saying: “the great Iranian nation has made them angry and has brought them to their knees.”
