Iran inaugurated on Thursday a surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of 1,400 km and a new cruise missile.
The move was announced by Iranian Defense Minister Amir Hatami, who noted that the missiles were named after the former head of Iran’s elite Quds Force Major-General Qassem Suleimani and former deputy commander of Iraq’s Hashd Shaabi forces Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis who were martyred in a US strike on Baghdad airport earlier this year.
“The surface-to-surface missile, called martyr Haj Qassem, has a range of 1,400 km and the cruise missile, called martyr Abu Mahdi, has a range of over 1000 kilometers,” Hatami said.
“The Iranian defense industry, which is considered as the fundamentals of military self-reliance and is one of the main requirements of the country’s authority, is now a mature one with 770 various product groups that can supply the demand of the Iranian Armed Forces in wars,” the minister added.
He noted that the Islamic Republic has achieved remarkable achievements in defense sector, in particular, in the recent three years among which it can be referred to the unveiling of ‘Kosar’ fighter Jets.
In the field of ballistic missiles using solid fuel, Iran has improved from its previous ‘Zolfaqar missile’ with a range of 700 kilometers to its current Martyr Suleimani ballistic missile with a range of 1,400 kilometers, Hatai said.
Iranian news agency Tasnim posted a video showing the missiles.
In late July, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Imam Sayyed Ali Khamenei said Iran will never forget Washington’s assassination of General Soleimani and will definitely deliver a “counterblow” to the United States.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran will never forget this issue and will definitely deal the counterblow to the Americans,” Imam Khamenei said in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi in Tehran.
“They killed your guest at your own home and unequivocally admitted the atrocity. This is no small matter,” the Leader told the Iraqi premier.
