After a 3-year delay, the municipal elections in Lebanon will start as of May 4, 2025, in Mount Lebanon governorate, knowing that the rest of the five key governorates will witness the vote every weekend of the same month.
Ministry of Interior has set the dates for holding the municipal and mayoral elections across various governorates, as follows:
– Mount Lebanon: May 4, 2025
– North Lebanon and Akkar: May 11, 2025.
– Beirut, Bekaa, and Baalbek-Hermel: May 18, 2025
– South Lebanon and Nabatieh: May 25, 2025.
The municipal electoral bodies are invited at least one month prior to the election date in each governorate.
In Mount Lebanon, the municipal councils of 64 towns have won by acclamation, while the rest of towns will witness a competition on Sunday.
The various parties announced their lists of candidates for the municipal elections, confirming the local nature of the vote and highlighting the importance of serving the people in this regard.
In a televised speech on Monday via Al-Manar TV, Hezbollah Secretary General Sheikh Naim Qassem highlighted the importance of the upcoming municipal elections, stressing that “certain political conditions must be met to ensure the elections are held properly and contribute to building a sound state, thereby leading to Lebanon’s revival.”
His Eminence called on municipal candidates to be competent, popular, and interested in public affairs.
He also called on citizens for “strong turnout and active participation” in the elections, emphasizing that this would help drive the country’s development and instill a sense of shared national responsibility.
It is worth noting that the municipal vote is held every six years. In 2016, the Lebanon witnessed the latest municipal elections; however, due to coincidence with the parliamentary elections, the municipal vote was delayed in 2022 for one year. In 2023, the financial burdens pushed the authorities to delay the elections. In 2024, the security considerations of the Israeli attacks on Lebanon, especially the South, delayed the entitlement till 2025.
