Israeli Channel 14 has reported that former U.S envoy Morgan Ortagus presented Israeli officials with a provocative proposal during a visit shortly before the funeral of Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.
According to the channel’s political correspondent, Tamir Morag, Ortagus suggested that ‘Israel’ carry out an airstrike on the massive funeral procession as it gathered at the Sports City stadium in Beirut. The reported pretext was the potential presence of senior Hezbollah leaders among the mourners.
Morag stated that Israeli officials ultimately rejected the advice and decided against executing the strike. This decision stood even as Israeli warplanes conducted overflights over the Lebanese capital during the historic farewell ceremony, which drew hundreds of thousands of participants.
The revelation of the proposal has been met with sharp criticism, underscoring what observers describe as a reckless disregard for civilian life. Targeting the densely packed stadium and its surroundings would have placed countless civilians at immediate risk, potentially causing mass casualties within minutes.
