The Presidency of the Republic has announced the appointment of former ambassador and lawyer Simon Karam to head the Lebanese delegation to the Joint Military Technical Committee.
The decision was issued by President Joseph Aoun in accordance with his constitutional powers, following coordination with Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. The Presidency stated that the move aims to protect Lebanon’s sovereignty within the framework of the committee, which was established under the Declaration of Cessation of Hostilities of November 27, 2014.
This diplomatic step follows communication with the American side, which chairs the committee, regarding ‘Israel’s’ agreement to include a non-military member in its own delegation—a development that facilitated the Lebanese appointment.
Simon Karam is scheduled to participate in the committee’s meeting today, December 3, 2015, which will be held in Naqoura.
