Iran’s deputy FM Hussein Jaberi Ansari said Wed. the Astana talks on Syria settlement will concentrate on discussing the continuation of the cessation of hostilities in the Arab country.
As reported by SANA, Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs Hussein Jaberi Ansari, who is heading Iran’s delegation to the meeting, said in a statement upon his arrival in Kazakhstan on Tuesday that the meeting will discuss the issue of coordination for establishing stability in the identified areas and assessing procedures of the joint committee for monitoring the implementation of the cessation of hostilities.
On Saturday, the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said that it had invited the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic and representatives of “the opposition” in addition to UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura to meet in Astana on February 15-16 for settling the crisis in Syria.
As of now, the Russian delegation and representatives from the Syrian government have arrived in Astana. Other delegations expected to attend are from the armed opposition, Turkey and Jordan. United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, as well as the representatives of the US will attend as observers.
The two-day meeting will cover implementation of the ceasefire regime in Syria, measures to stabilize situation in particular areas, adoption of rules for a joint operational group, and agreeing on further measures to consolidate the ceasefire regime, as well as other practical steps in light of the upcoming intra-Syrian talks in Geneva on February 23, 2017.
