The Yemeni military media broadcasted scenes showing a Turkish-made Karayel armed spy drone belonging to the Saudi Air Force that was shot down Saturday by the Yemeni air defenses in the airspace of the Hiran region in Hajjah Governorate.
On Sunday, the Yemeni Armed Forces Spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree announced the downing of the armed drone “while it was violating the armistice and carrying out hostile missions in the airspace of the Hiran region in Hajjah Governorate.”
This is the fourth Karayel drone shot down by the Yemeni Armed Forces.
On December 31, 2019, the Yemeni forces downed a Karayel drone in the Salif area northwest of the coastal city of Al-Hudaydah.
Similarly, the Yemeni Armed Forces downed a drone of the same type in the airspace of the Al-Jawf Governorate in January 2021, and another drone on March 7 of the same year in the airspace of the Al-Marazeq area in the Khabb and Al-Sha’af district in Al-Jawf Governorate, northeastern Yemen.
The Turkish-made drone is used for the purpose of reconnaissance, surveillance, and precision bombing. It is the first tactical unmanned aircraft designed and produced in accordance with the NATO STANAG-4671 Standardized Agreement for reconnaissance and surveillance purposes.
The drone features an innovative avionics architecture that ensures protection against all types of uncontrolled collisions.
It is noteworthy that on May 4, the Yemeni air defenses managed to shoot down a Chinese-made armed spy plane CH4 belonging to the Saudi Air Force with a locally-made surface-to-air missile, while it was violating the armistice and carrying out hostile acts in the airspace of the Haradh District of Hajjah Governorate.
