A pause in the Vienna talks was required due to “external factors”, European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Twitter, without elaborating.
Borrell said the sides had come very close to agreement but didn’t say when — or if — the negotiations would be able to resume.
A pause in #ViennaTalks is needed, due to external factors.
A final text is essentially ready and on the table.
As coordinator, I will, with my team, continue to be in touch with all #JCPOA participants and the U.S. to overcome the current situation and to close the agreement.

Earlier on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian told tBorrell that “the main issues and the effective lifting of sanctions should not be influenced by excessive US demands.”
In the phone call, Borrell called on both Iran and the US for more flexibility in Vienna talks.
The EU foreign policy chief added that the EU supports Iran’s call for economic guarantees.
The Iranian foreign minister further said that the United States has made excessive demands recently, describing them as nonsense and an obstacle to the talks.
