Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed on Wednesday the latest situation in Syria, particularly the humanitarian issues by phone.
On Dec. 20, the two top diplomats sat at a trilateral meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow, which concluded in a seven-article statement on the Syrian situation. The three sides urged respect for Syria’s territorial integrity, national unity and a political solution to end the crisis.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Zarif stressed that, “all three countries are making efforts to have political dialogues in Syria about establishing a ceasefire and delivering humanitarian aid to the people.”
Meanwhile, Turkey and Russia agreed on Wednesday on the outlines of a nationwide ceasefire plan in Syria for Damascus to consider, according to Turkish media. Russia-Turkey framework agreement on Syria proposes end of hostilities in the country starting at midnight local time on December 29. The ceasefire proposal is planned to be presented to the Syrian government for consideration.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are also scheduled to meet mid-January in the Kazakh capital city, Astana, to confer on the Syrian situation.
