Jordan announced on Monday that the Jaber border crossing with Syria will reopen on Wednesday for passengers and freight.

The announcement was made by Interior Minister Mazen Faraya, Jordanian media reported.

According to a ministry statement, the decision to restart this key entry point “is aimed at revitalizing the two-way trade and tourism movement while ensuring adherence to safety and security protocols.”

Amman has been taking steps towards Damascus in recent months, with high-profile meetings taking place between the two countries in latest weeks.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi met with his Syrian counterpart Faisal Mekdad during the UN General Assembly last week.

The meeting comes just days after Syria’s Minister of Defense visited Jordan—the highest level Syrian official to visit the Hashemite Kingdom since the Syrian war erupted in 2011.
