The Lebanese Presidency announced on Friday it has set Monday, August 31) a date for holding consultations between President Michel Aoun and parliamentary blocs in a bid to pick a new premier.
In a statement carried by the National News Agency, the Lebanese Presidency said: “Pursuant to the provisions of Article 2 of Text 53 of the Constitution, His Excellency the President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, will conduct parliamentary consultations to name the Prime Minister designated to form the new Government, on Monday August 31st 2020, at the Presidential Palace, in Baabda.”
The statement set an approximate time for every parliamentary bloc to name its nominee for the new premiership.
On August 10, caretaker PM Hassan Diab submitted resignation in the wake of deadly blast which took place at Beirut Port on August 4, killing more than 200 people, injuring at least 6,000 others and leaving hundreds of thousands of the residents in the capital homeless.
On Thursday, Al-Manar correspondent cited sources at Baabda as saying that the date of parliamentary consultations would be set soon, noting that Lebanon was heading to pick a new premier before a visit by French President Emanuel Macron to Beirut later next week.
