More than 60 people are still missing in Beirut, four days after massive explosions rock the city’s port, killing at least 154 people and injuring nearly 6,000 others.
“The number of dead is 154, including 25 who have not yet been identified,” the official told the AFP news agency. “In addition, we have more than 60 people still missing.”
Health Minister Hamad Hasan said on Friday that at least 120 of the 5,000 people who were injured on Tuesday are in critical condition.
Meanwhile, a donors’ videoconference organized by France and the UN to stump up aid for the devastated Lebanese capital will be held Sunday at 1200 GMT, the French president’s office announced Saturday.
US President Donald Trump had announced Friday that he would take part, saying “everyone wants to help!”
“We will be having a conference call on Sunday with President Macron, leaders of Lebanon, and leaders from various other parts of the world,” Trump added.
Officials say a huge shipment of dangerous ammonium nitrate, a base chemical for fertilizers and explosives, had languished for years in a warehouse at the port and somehow caught fire, leading to the massive blast.
On Friday, Lebanon’s discriminatory Attorney General Judge Ghassan El-Khoury ordered the arrest of evening three senior officials at Port of Beirut.
The arrested officials include General Director of Customs Badri Daher, former Customs Director Chafic Merhi and Director General of Beirut Port Hassan Koraytem.
Lebanon has been in mourning as Beirut was ravaged by the two massive blasts which left third a million people homeless.
