Hundreds of Palestinian prisoners entered the 39th day of a mass hunger strike in Israeli custody on Thursday.
At least 1,300 Palestinian prisoners have been since April 17 on a hunger strike. They have been calling for an end to the denial of family visits, the right to pursue higher education, appropriate medical care and treatment, and an end to solitary confinement and administrative detention — imprisonment without charge or trial — among other demands for basic rights.
Also on Thursday events supporting the prisoners are taking place in several areas across Palestine, the National Committee to Support Dignity Strike reported.
Earlier, the Media Department in Palestinian Committee of Prisoners’ Affairs reported that dozens of Palestinian hunger strikers were transferred to hospitals and field clinics on Wednesday.
Israeli news outlet Ynet reported that the hunger strike leader, Marwan Barghouthi, had been temporarily taken to a hospital on Wednesday due to his health condition, before being returned to Kishon prison.
Ynet also said that in total 154 Palestinian prisoners were taken to hospitals to undergo medical examinations on Wednesday.
