Israeli occupation army acknowledged on Thursday it was a “failure” that Hamas fighters managed to storm an army encampment — including into a building where troops were stationed — in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis on Wednesday.
According to an updated Israeli military probe of the attack, the Hamas operatives emerged from a tunnel some 40-50 meters (130-160 feet) from the military post, which served troops from the Kfir Infantry Brigade, as well as the 74th Armored Battalion.
The tunnel had been known to the occupation military, and part of it had been previously demolished, The Times of Israel reported citing the occupation army’s probe.
“The gunmen split into three groups, with one stationed on a dirt mound for suppressive fire, the second heading into a building in the encampment that was not occupied by any soldiers, and the third attacking a building that had soldiers stationed in it,” according to the probe.

“Two Hamas gunmen breached the building where the troops were stationed, and they exchanged fire for around five minutes. Fighting also took place outside the building with additional gunmen from the same group,” it added.
The occupation army military said that a Hamas fighter was killed in the building, while another fled and was killed outside.
Three soldiers were injured in this exchange of fire, one seriously and two lightly, the Israeli military said, though the occupation army frequently dismisses losses and gives lessened toll.
Earlier on Wednesday, Hamas’ Al-Qassam announced that resistance fighters stormed a newly-established Israeli site in Khan Younis, targeting Merkava IV tanks and raiding houses where the Israeli occupation soldiers were stationed.
The resistance fighters killed a number of Israeli soldiers and sniped a Merkava IV tank driver, inflicting a deadly injury upon him, according to a statement released by Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas.
