House Speaker Nabih Berri has scheduled a parliament session devoted to electing a president of the republic for Monday, January 9, at the beginning of a parliament session on Thursday.
Before starting the session, Berri asked the lawmakers to observe a moment of silence for the martyrs.
Commenting on the president election session, Berri said: “It will be fruitful, and we have given a one-month period to reach consensus among us.”
He added that he will invite the ambassadors of states to attend the session.
Speaker Berri, on Thursday received French Presidential Envoy, Jean-Yves Le Drian, at his office, accompanied by French Ambassador Hervé Magro and media advisor Ali Hamdan.
Discussions focused on Lebanon’s political developments, the presidential election, and the broader situation following the cessation of Israeli aggression.
The House of Parliament on Thursday concluded its general session during which a proposal by Deputy House Speaker, Elias Bou Saab, to extend the term of Army brigadier generals and higher ranks for one year was put to a vote.
The proposal received the support of 48 MPs, effectively extending the term of Lebanese Army Commander, General Joseph Aoun.
Speaking from the House of Parliament, MP Hassan Fadlallah, emphasized that the decision to wage war is taken by Israel, stating, “When they attack us, we will resist.”
Fadlallah dismissed the notion of conflict between the Lebanese Army and the resistance, describing their relationship as one of “unity and solidarity.”
Moreover, Fadlallah affirmed support for the Army, recognizing its sacrifices alongside the resistance.
“We stand by the Lebanese Army, which has shed blood for this nation,” he said, explaining the bloc’s vote to extend the terms of senior officers to avoid leadership vacancies.
The lawmaker called for a unified national vision to build a just state, strengthen the Army with advanced weaponry, and confront Israeli violations.
After its war on Lebanon failed to achieve any goal, the Israeli enemy accepted a ceasefire proposal submitted by US and France. The Lebanese health ministry reported 3961 martyrs claimed by the Zionist aggression which ended on November 27.
