Amidst the chaos, a polio vaccination campaign began to curb the spread of the virus among children in Gaza. The campaign, which aims to vaccinate over 640,000 children under the age of 10, started in central Gaza and will extend to the southern and northern regions of the Strip.

The vaccination program required an “immediate ceasefire” according to the Gaza Health Ministry. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the vaccination efforts are not related to ceasefire negotiations and emphasized that they do not constitute a ceasefire.
The first phase of the polio vaccination campaign kicked off on Sunday morning in the central Gaza Strip with the World Health Organization (WHO) releasing a list of clinics, schools and other locations where children under the age of 10 can receive the polio vaccines.

The urgency of the polio vaccination campaign became apparent after the discovery of the first polio case in 25 years in Gaza. The 10-month-old child was partially paralyzed by a mutated strain of the virus due to the unavailability of the vaccine amidst the ongoing conflict.
