UNIFIL Spokesperson Andrea Tenenti reported a “concerning incident” stating that two mortar shells struck a UNIFIL base near Houla, South Lebanon, resulting in an injury to a peacekeeper the day before.
“On Saturday around 10 p.m., two mortar shells struck a UNIFIL base near Houla, resulting in an injury to a peacekeeper who was promptly evacuated for medical attention,” the statement read.
He provided further information, noting, “The peacekeeper sustained minor injuries and was expeditiously transported to the hospital at UNIFIL’s headquarters in Naqoura. Presently, the individual’s condition remains stable.”
Continuing, Tenenti revealed that, “In the previous day, UNIFIL faced two separate attacks: one in the afternoon, which targeted our central headquarters in Naqoura, and another in the evening near Houla, leading to the injury of yet another peacekeeper.”
Speaking on behalf of UNIFIL, the official spokesperson expressed grave concern, emphasizing, “UNIFIL deeply laments these two attacks on our dedicated soldiers who tirelessly strive for 24/7 stability restoration in southern Lebanon, striving to mitigate this perilous situation.”
Concluding his statement, Tenenti issued a strong plea, stating, “We fervently implore all parties involved in the conflict to immediately cease hostilities. Attacking United Nations peacekeepers constitutes a crime and a breach of international law, deserving unequivocal condemnation. Investigations are already underway for both of these incidents.”
