US Ambassador to the United Nations said Washington States plans holding a session of the UN General Assembly on Russia’s participation in the UN Human Rights Council as soon as on Thursday.
In an interview with the National Public Radio (NPR), Linda Thomas-Greenfield said she “will bring the matter before the Security Council on Wednesday immediately after returning to New York, and expects the General Assembly to take up the issue as early as Thursday,” NPR reported on Tuesday.
US White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told a news briefing earlier that President Joe Biden had instructed Thomas-Greenfield to seek suspension of Russia’s membership with the UN Human Rights Council.
Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said during a news conference that Russia viewed West’s attempts to exclude the country from the United Nations Human Rights Council as unbelievable.
“This is unprecedented. And this will not facilitate or encourage or be helpful to what is happening between Russian and Ukrainian peace talks,” the Russian diplomat said.
